Heavy Duty Simmer Plate with Wood Handle, Heat Diffuser / Reducer, 8.5 Inch

who designed this?
I am not faulting the storefront as they were very fast and provided a product that they wouldn't know would fail so miserably, hence the 5 starts for them. The design is very faulty. The handle (made of wood) has a piece that inserts into the round plate, which heats up so much when you use it that it turns to charcoal inside!! I did not notice that this was happening until the charcoal pieces disintegrated and the plate fell off when I picked it up. Thank goodness there wasn't a pan on it! The pricing on this is so low that it is not worth returning, but I will inspect things much more closely in the future.

Clearly not "heavy duty"
The material of the diffuser is much more light-weight than I was expecting. I don't expect it to last very long. The wooden handle got charred the first time that we used it because of the heat deflected from under the diffuser. We are using our old one and only keeping this as a backup when we need to use two diffusers. I am still looking for something that is genuinely heavy-duty!

It's what it is
This is an item that is sold in my local dollar store. For a dollar, yes.

The wooden handle does burn, especially on a gas burner -- how could it not?

I remove the handle and just use the plate by itself. You place it when it's not hot and just leave it there, so do you really need the handle? I don't.

Probably most folks are feeling "burned" by the price. I only paid a buck, and I love it and have a couple more in reserve. If I had paid eight bucks I would be mad too.
